ALMOST TOO GORGEOUS TO EAT!
Red velvet cake is traditionally southern. But then again, so is strawberry cake. Being from the south, these extravagant desserts were the norm at holidays and get-togethers. Strawberry cake in particular looks so prim and proper. It’s such a pretty cake; you almost hate to cut into it. When I was little, my grandma would make us waffles and pancakes and all those sorts of things when we’d visit. At this age, I remember I wasn’t allowed to use a knife to cut my food. Not that I was skilled enough to properly cut anything anyway. So Grandpa would cut up my food but he’d leave it in the original shape, like a puzzle. “Now don’t break my puzzle,” he’d warn me.
I loved Grandpa so I’d sit there, obediently, not destroying his puzzle until Grandma saw I wasn’t eating and would holler at me to eat it. When Grandpa came by and saw me eating, he’d tease, “Oh-oh! You broke my puzzle!” So the same thing applies to this cake…you really don’t want to destroy it, but for the greater good, you must. You must get it in your belly immediately.
