THEY PUT THE “FUN” IN “FUNNEL!”
If you like having a Family Fun Night, this is such a great thing to make for it. The recipe will give you 8 funnel cakes which sounds like a lot but I can assure you that you’ll all tear them to shreds and have nothing left but smudges of powdered sugar. The key with this is to get the oil hot enough. It needs to be at 375°. If it’s not hot enough, you’re just going to wind up with a mushy blob of batter.
Now here’s the super-fun part. You’ll take a funnel and put your finger over the spout part at the bottom. Then, pour a ½ cup of the batter into your funnel. Release your finger after you move the funnel just a few inches over your hot oil and start moving the funnel in a spiral pattern until it’s empty. These get fried until they get that nice, golden brown color, which should be about 2 minutes per side. Before putting your confectioners’ sugar on top, make sure you drain the excess oil from your funnel cakes on paper towels. And that’s how you bring the carnival home!
