HUZZAH! HOMEMADE DING DONGS!
My first real job was delivering a weekly newspaper to my neighbors. I worked for several hours on Wednesday afternoons and at the end of the day I would walk away with a profit of $5-8 dollars. After counting my profits, I would sit down with my father and split my money into three groups: charity, saving, and fun. Charity would always go to my church offering, savings went to my passbook savings account (remember when you used to have to carry around your passbook to bank?) and then there was the fun. The fun? It almost always went to food.
At the corner store down the road, there was the penny candy display (with candies that actually cost a penny), the chip stand, and then the holy grail of childhood snacks: The Hostess and Little Debbie Cake Display. Twinkies! Donettes! Cupcakes! Ho hos! Snowballs! And the ultimate in snacking delights as a child: Ding Dongs! And the price? A whopping $.10. I would load my pockets with sweet treats and head back to my home, snacking all the way.
If I could go back in time and tell my 8 year old self that this incredible Ding Dong Cake exists, she might have just hit the floor with excitement. Let’s go to the next page (click the Next button below) to see how we can put this amazing Ding Dong Cake together.
