MAKE IT YOUR OWN!
Now I must tell you that the original recipe for this calls for ¼ cup of Kahlua. But for those of you that will be sharing this with those under the age of 21 or if you simply don’t want alcoholic beverages in your dessert, you can still make it without any alcohol, no problem. If you’ve never had Kahlua, it’s a chocolate-coffee flavored liquor. You have a couple options here for effectively replacing it. Simply substitute ½ to 1 teaspoon of chocolate extract or you can substitute ½ to 1 teaspoon of instant coffee that has been dissolved into 2 tablespoons water for every 2 tablespoons of Kahlua.
As for me, while I love Kahlua, I did not have any on hand but I did have chocolate extract so that’s what I used and it was wonderful. Mom made hers with Kahlua but I’m not surprised. She has EVERY liqueur you can imagine on her shelf. Yes, visits are extra fun!
