LIKE GRANDMA USED TO MAKE, BUT FASTER!
My grandpa always joked, “Grandma was slow but she was old!” He’d do this even when what she was doing too slowly was no fault of her own. Apple pies take time to put together from scratch. But these apple pie bars? They’re a total snap. First, you’ll chuck the dry ingredients into a bowl and then you’ll add the shortening until it gets crumbly. Then come the egg yolks and water. Keep mixing this stuff up until you can form it into a ball. That’s your dough. Roll it out to fit the pan.
You’ll mix up the apple mixture next and then AFTER you spread it on the dough, you’ll drop butter in a sporadically-random way all around it. Then comes the crumbly topping. You’ll mix the ingredients together until it becomes, well, crumbly. Then you’ll put that on top and bake away. When it’s done, you can cool it on the ledge. Or dig right in and serve it with a nice big side of ice cream.
